Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki, formerly called Salonica, is the second most populated Greek city and the first and most important one in the region of Macedonia. It was founded back in 315 B.C. by Cassander, King of the Macedonians.
Second main commercial harbour after Athens, the city lies on the Aegean Sea mainly stretching along its waters, at the foot of a hill where the acropolis once rose.

Back in old times, the bastions used to surround the city with a 5 mile square-like structure. They were fortified by square or rectangular towers, like the one which is still present at the end of the promenade called 'White Tower'. Once an old Ottoman jail-castle, it is now considered the city symbol.

It is the promenade itself to stand as the city's heart and showcase. Hagia Sophia church is another must-see.
Once a paleochristian temple, the church was later converted into a mosque and now it is the orthodox cornerstone of the city.

Among the most prominent Byzantine monuments in Salonica we also find Panagia Chalkeon church, with a classic cross-in-square form. Do not forget to visit the Byzantine Museum.
