Tunis

Tunisia’s capital, it is located on the banks of a lagoon at the foot of the ancient city of Carthage, in northern Africa. The city is rich in history and typical monuments of the Arabic culture.
Among the most important monuments are the Mosque of Aghlabids and the city surrounding walls.
The former, a most ancient Tunisian place of worship, is one of the grandest examples of the art of the Aghlabids, first Muslim autonomous dynasty within the Abbasid Caliphate, whereas the city walls, built during the Byzantine Empire, were demolished and reconstructed several times.

The most popular tourist attraction of the area, though, is Carthage, Unesco site since 1979.
According to a Roman legend, it was founded in 814 b.C. by Phoenician colonists coming from Tyre led by Queen Dido.
. It then turned into a great and rich city, much influential in the western Mediterranean area, up until the crash against Rome for the hegemony on the seas. It was then permanently destroyed in 698 AD. Today it hosts an archaeological site with the old Phoenician city’s ruins and the following Roman colonization. It houses a museum in its premises.
