Skopje

Capital city of North Macedonia, in the very heart of the Balkan peninsula, Skopje is the birthplace of Mother Teresa of Calcutta - whose memorial house is available to visit - and has strong ties with Alexander the Great, to whom a large equestrian statue was recently dedicated, located in the central Macedonia Square.

Founded by the Illyrians and then under Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman rule, Skopje is today a blend of old monuments and modern buildings. Among the most significant historical monuments we can see the 15th century Stone Bridge, connecting the Old Ottoman Bazaar on the north bank of the Vardar River to the modern Macedonia Square to the south, and the Fortress, which overlooks the river and defended the city for centuries, and the Bazaar.

The new urban city plan, following the severe earthquake in 1964, was entrusted to the famous Japanese architect Kenzo Tange. Works were completed around 1980, but more renovations were carried out after the city's independence in 1991, within the Skopje 2014 urban project.
