Santiago de Compostela'Buen camino!' is how pilgrims and walkers from all over the world are greeted along the popular route, leading from various parts of Europe to the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, where the remains of St James the Greater, one of Jesus' apostles, are said to be found.
Undoubtedly, the international fame of Santiago, the Spanish city in Galicia, is closely connected to the dominating Cathedral, which represents the end point of the Way of St James, which is thought to have started around the year 800 and has been awarded the title of World Heritage Site by Unesco since 1993.
In 2019 almost 350,000 people completed the Pilgrim's Way to Santiago, using the various routes available, the most famous of which is the 'camino francés', which starts on the French side of the Pyrenees.
The interest in these 'caminos', done by a growing number of people, not only out of religious reasons but also for cultural, historical and spiritual interest in the broadest sense, has given rise to numerous accommodation and catering facilities all along this route.
